Hasef Nazeri and the Rumi
Symphony create dreams at the Pantages
By Naughty Mickie
Hafez Nazeri has it all- he's young,
handsome and talented. A New York resident from Iran, he
is the son of famous vocalist Shahram Nazeri. Hafez is a
noted composer and has received much recognition for his
innovative setar technique. He has also invented a new
instrument, the Hafez (named for the poet), which has
two more strings that the setar, thus it blends more
easily with Western instruments.
It is this mixing of music and
culture which inspires Hafez, as he seeks to bring forth
understanding, enlightenment and peace. And if his
concert at the Pantages in Hollywood is any indication,
I think he has a good chance of opening some minds...
and hearts.
The Pantages was packed and in
rapt attention during the entire performance. The music
was a very intriguing blend of Persian sounds and
influences with Western phrasings and movements. It
washed over me and made me feel extremely relaxed. It
was perhaps the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
Shahram also sang during some of
the selections and later returned to the stage to
perform solo for the encore.
I would definitely like to see
Hafez in concert again. Until then, I will have to make
do by listening to his album, "The Passion of Rumi"
(Quarter Tone Productions). To learn more about this
