They say self-deprecation rarely tells a lie. Where this
might be true, it certainly makes for a unique flavor to music.
"Rendezvous With The Angels" is Lucca's latest tale. As he is adapting
to the new role of "daddy dearest," his album left me with a kind of "meh"
feeling. Having been a fan of songs like "Bad Guy" and "Melancholy
Collar," I felt like I was being handed a clichéd one-timer sooner to
see its days as a coaster than spinning in my CD player where it
belonged. Where's the spine, the angst?.. Where are the daily struggles
of life and a mind full of passion?
Thankfully, I had faith and hung in there through the
love ballads that we've all heard soaring on the radio stations and the
tales that 'dun hit us like a Mac truck enough times for us to catch the
plates and call a cab the next time we need a ride. "Vienna" - Track 9.
The opening piano interlude danced minor and the first lyric spoke to
me: "Slow down you crazy child, you're so ambitious for a juvenile. But
if you're so smart then tell me why are you still so afraid?" There's a
man behind this song. This is not just someone going through the motions
anymore, this is someone going through the EMOTIONS too. Unfortunately I
came to find out that this song was a cover of Billy Joel's original...
Yet still, growing up, We take a lumps. We all put the
cart in front of the horse and get run over. More often than not, we
cannot express in combinations of vivid imagery, beautiful guitar solos,
or piano triplets that resonate in a loosely French (though graciously
European) tone exactly what it is we want to say. What it is we feel.
This was the man I looked up to. “Stay With Me Tonight,” “Song to a
Martyr,” and “Nobody But You” did themselves justice, as well utilizing
the same undertones and clever etiquettes.
"You know when the truth gets told you can kick off or
you can just get old.." Though my words may sting a little to the avid
fan, I express an opinion as a fan that is exactly what we're all owed.
Truth of opinion for him. For myself.
