Changing Hands-- it's
not just a bookstore, it's a cultural event
By Sally A. Schwartz
When you
walk into a bookstore, you sometime have a specific book
that you are seeking. Other people find it a way to pass
time and yet others like to roam around taking in
the smell of the books and searching out the journey that
the mind can take while looking through books. I find that
I fall in the latter category. I love the smell of books
and I love to take my mind on a journey with a good book.
I also love to learn about cultures. So it is no wonder
that I found out that Changing Hands, a local bookstore in
Tempe, AZ, offered their shoppers a holiday performance by
one of my favorite trios.
When I
walked into Changing Hands on the night of the 14th of
December, I was delighted that there were many others that
were just as excited as I to see R. Carlos Nakai, Will
Clipman and William Eaton perform and share some holiday
cheer. The Native American music trio won a Grammy
nomination for their album, "Dancing into Silence,"
earlier this year.
I first
fell in love with the music of Nakai years ago when I had
come across his album, "Mythic Dreamer" (Canyon Records).
The trio has since shared a long relationship with Canyon
Records and has put out many albums, on their own, as well
as with other musicians. The three have stated that they
aren't rock stars, just simple musicians, musicians who
share and offer a deep connection with their music. Their
songs bring me a chance to quiet my soul, while letting my
spirit take flight.
I enjoy both music and books
and searching out bookstores that give readers a personal
touch that you can not receive from a Kindle or Nook and
Changing Hands is one venue that strives to bring its
visitors the best of everything. Not only do they offer
you a journey of the mind, but they combine their quest
for culture with recording companies, such as Canyon
Records, which prides itself in offering listeners
the finest in Native American music.
It was a
well-deserved entertaining evening that brought a little
peace during a bustling holiday season. Bookstores
can offer more than books, so seek out one that offers a
diverse cultural experience-- you will not regret it.
