Ken Waldman fiddles
around in Fullerton
When I received the letter from
my friend, Ken Waldman, telling me he would be
coming to the Muckethaller in Fullerton, California,
I was way ahead of him. I have been following
"Alaska's Fiddling Poet" ever since I first heard
his music many years ago. Back then, he was just
starting out on the road and he still is out there
pursuing his dream.
The crowd was tiny, but mighty at
the venue that night. Waldman took the stage and
offered up his Appalachian style fiddle along with
his poetry and stories about Alaska. It was like
sitting in his living room, as his banter was so
comfortable and his rapport so friendly. Yes, I am a
fan, but this was the comment that I overheard
several times at the end of the night from the
audience.
Waldman claims that he's only an
adequate fiddle player, but he has a certain style
and finesse that only comes with knowing your
instrument well. His choice of music was good
because it varied and showed a range of moods.
Ken Waldman presents a very
different sort of show, still one you can take
anyone to and they will find something they enjoy.
